DECEMBER 2007
Artist of the Month - Matt DelPorto
I'm 19, I have lived in Salt Lake City my entire life, As a kid I attended many different schools, and traveled many places. I collect things. I collect experiences, art, books, and clutter. As a kid I used to haul a back pack full of toys with me. The sciences of philosophy, psychology, biology, chemistry, and sociology fascinate me. Some of the artists I’ve been into recently: Keith Haring, Jean Michel Basquiat, R. Crumb, Porous Walker, William Burroughs, and Jack Kerouac. Read the rest here.

Rumours Feature: "Bubbles"
So, I was sitting down the other day and pondering “stuff”. This is the time of year that many people stop to reflect, analyze and prepare for a new year; a time of transformation. It is also the time of year that the masses seem to go mad - rushing to fill the emptiness so many feel. Being on a journey of introspection causes lots of observation of others - and oneself. We seem to get so caught up in the “stuff”; whether that be material stuff, emotional stuff or situational stuff, that we become oblivious to what is really going on, internally. Observing is liberating... I look at my “situations” like a bubble. Picture a big beautiful bubble, like the ones you used to blow from the little plastic doo-hickey when you were a kid... Inside this bubble sits a dark colored, dense cluster with lots of small tendrils reaching our towards the bubbles surface - I call it the cause-center. We each have a variety of cause-centers with their own respective bubbles that we carry along with us; some more than others and to varying degrees of size and intensity.
We as people love our bubbles. They are shimmery and wonderful. They are so consuming that we rarely look at the cause-center. Then, the cause-centers tendrils reach the bubble surface, bringing out imperfections. Something goes amiss and we say; “Ewww, this bubble is `making’ me feel icky, I need to change it”. So we pop the bubble and create a new bubble around the same cause-center - the tendrils retract with the popping of the old bubble and the cause-center fades back into the background. And for awhile the new bubble feels good. It is shiny and new and seems to fit perfectly - all is wonderful again. Soon enough, the shine dims a bit, new tendrils reach out from the cause-center and once again the “imperfections” start to show up again. The cycle repeats.
We move along the road of life carrying our array of bubbles and cause-centers, sometimes stumbling, but almost always creating new bubbles over our cause-centers. Many even add more and more cause-centers to their collection and sometimes split and become two separate cause-centers; each with their own pretty (for the time being) bubble. Does this sound familiar? It sure does to me... As I observed my own bubbles and cause-centers, it dawned on me that each time I changed my bubble, the cause-center stayed the same. Or, grew or even split into two. I rarely looked at these cause-centers. They were blurred from my sight, and I, unwilling to really look at them. So, I started to observe, to be aware of the cause-centers and what they carried. I realized that no matter how much I tried to change my bubble(s), they always ended up the same - the cause-centers tendrils would reach out and blemish my wonderful bubbles. Well, what if I changed the cause-center? What if I took what was at the center of the bubble and altered it? What then?
It is the beginning of a new journey. One in which observation is centered on my cause-center(s). My bubbles seem brighter again, more beautiful and more “alive”. Will it still be “necessary” to change the bubbles? Will we want to change the bubbles? I think that by changing the cause-centers, they will slowly disappear, leaving us with our beautiful bubbles to shape and change as we desire. I am enjoying my bubbles, even the “murky” ones, they each have much to share.
My wish is that during this season of sharing, reflection and transformation, is for each of us to observe more closely, be a bit easier on ourselves and others, and find the love and joy in all of our bubbles..
Poem of the Month: "CHOOSE NOW"
Contemplating again
Thoughts drift
Sorting the threads
Carefully sift
Seeking the treasures
That shape desire
The tiny glimmer
That feeds fire
Choices are paths
That weave and entwine
Bring together
With lessons we find
Chance is fiction
Fate is an excuse
Coincidence isn't
Choices we choose
Hind-site remembers
Foresight forgets
Now isn't seen
It all equals regrets
I choose now
This very instant
I can now see
For I am present

Monthly Horoscope:
DECEMBER 2007 - Sagittarius
Your romantic imagination is strong now. Dreams of an idealized true love or feelings of compassion and oneness with others emerge strongly at this time. Your perception of people gets rather hazy; you tend to see them through rose-colored glasses. It is best not to make firm commitments at this time. If you have creative or artistic inclinations, your work will blossom. You can come up with some really lovely, inspiring images. Your desire to make a fresh start, to take the initiative and strike out on your own, is a powerful drive right now. Your physical energy, will, and courage are intensified. Unless you channel your abundant energy into decisive action or vigorous work, accidents, anger, and irritability are likely at this time.
