I have always been driven by the arts, and have had the opportunity of living in Utah most of my life. The energy and movement in all of my work regardless of subject or medium is the same that I find in Utah’s rich variety of scenery and culture.

Coffee Tip of the Month - Fair Trade
Fair trade is an important term that everyone should have the
option to understand. It is basically about fair working
conditions and pay. There is a vast amount of information
pertaining to fair trade. I have taken a few key points as
outlined.
There are many products that can be fair trade certified, but I
will focus on coffee only.
Most coffee beans are grown on small independent farms. So, the most important thing for these farmers is a fair price for their produce. A trader needs to meet certain conditions outlined by F.L.O. (Fair Trade Labeling Organizations International) before they are able to claim fair trade. Trading standards stipulate that traders must:
1. Pay a price to producers that covers the costs of sustainable production and living;
2. Pay a 'premium' that producers can invest in development;
3. Make partial advance payments when requested by producers;
4. Sign contracts that allow for long-term planning and sustainable production practices.
The trader will complete an application and if the application is accepted by F.L.O., a group labeled FLO-CERT, who is responsible for inspection, will go to the trader for inspection. After consideration, they will deem it either fair traded, or not. If they are accepted for the label, FLO-CERT will regularly inspect certified producers.
Another interesting fact is that a fair trade mark or label can be put on a composite product if over 50% of the ingredients are from fair trade certified producers. (It's a start anyway.)
