Music that has influenced me: Gray Matter, Black heart Procession, Explosions in the sky, Godspeed: You Black Emperor, !!! (chik, chik, chik), The Pixies, Black Francis,
People places and things that have influenced me: The mountains, rooftops, beds, girlfriends, my parents, robots, chaos, friends, music, jobs, philosophy, Realms of Inquiry (a school in Sugarhouse area), San Francisco, New York, animation, comic books, film, transition and change.
Octber, 2007 Artist of the Month: David Mead
David Mead, a native of Indiana, moved to Utah after spending the first 3 years of his life in Germany. His family moved there when he was 6 months old. David's mother is Iranian, and his father has traveled all over the world. Culture was a large part of his education and upbringing. While growing up, David had the opportunity to return to Europe several times. Since then he has also traveled to various places around the globe.
His love for photography was sparked by a trip down the Rhine River in Germany. Not wanting to forget all the beautiful sights, he began shooting with an old cannon his father had used for many years. David began shooting photos everywhere he went. Finding beauty in simplicity, and art in the mundane has been of particular interest to him.
David graduated from the University of Utah in 2001. He lives in Sugarhouse with his beautiful wife Danielle. He owns a kitchen and bath remodeling showroom in Holladay and also does photography on the side. Travel is still at the top of the list of interests and every time he travels, there's one thing that never gets left at home.
September, 2007 Artist of the Month: Jim Pehkonin & Lisi Hoff
Local artist, Jim Pehkonen is back again and this time teamed up with Lisi Hoff in a dual showcase of faces & masks.
Jim's "Moods - Faces in Spaces", is pottery of the human face in various moods/modes. Combined with the striking visuals of Lisi's paintings this exibit creates a striking look at inner feelings.
August, 2007 Artist of the Month: Lisi Hoff
Born and raised in Copenhagen, Denmark, she began drawing at the age of five. She began painting in oils at age eleven, but stopped at age seventeen. She did continue drawing and painting in watercolor throughout the years, but mostly as a part-time hobby. After her arrival in the United States in 1963 she worked in Electronics, designing Printed Circuit Boards for the computer and high tech industry; although this never satisfied the inner creativity that lay dormant. In 1980 she began painting full time and went on to recieve her degee in Art from Smith College in Northampton, MA.

Lisi's art, which often reflects her own inner feelings, carries strong metaphysical connotations. This series explores the underlying pain and chaos of our modern society that boils within each of us.
Her works are in both private and public collections in The United States, Denmark, Canada and Mexico.

I am currently working part time as a graphic designer, doing freelance photography both by commission and selling fine art prints, as well as publicity coaching and vocal work in various musical groups. I danced for sixteen years and my understanding of motion learned while dancing shows up in my work.

Artist Statement:
I have always been driven by the arts, and have had the opportunity of living in Utah most of my life. The energy and movement in all of my work regardless of subject or medium is the same that I find in Utah’s rich variety of scenery and culture.

June, 2007 Artist of the Month: Cal Woody
Hi, I am Cal Woody. I am a Utah based graphic landscape artist which is best described by saying that I mix a graphic art background with a landscape in the fore front. I have lived in Utah all of my life and have grown up loving Utahs' beautiful scenery, especially our trees. My painting is where I get my spirituality from. I am a strong advocate of staying in today and my painting keeps me grounded in today. My finished paintings remind me of how beautiful yesterday was and give me a strong hope that tomorrow will be just as beautiful.

Art Statement:
My paintings are painted on fine hard birch wood, which I treat with many coats of plaster or mud, sanding each layer as they dry (usually 8 to 10 coats). Then I start painting. I use acrylics mostly and sometimes oil. I use a lot of gold leafing in my paintings and frames, and usually finish my pieces with a hard coat of polyurethane for gloss and shine. I have been a professional picture framer for 23 years and my frames on my art are hard and rough and rather simple. They coordinate with the work of art.

January, 2007 Artist of the Month: Chauncy Secrist
"In creating art I take an approach similar to that of the Expressionist movement of the early 20th Century. Art is about examining emotional extremes and creating an emotional reaction in the viewer. My own emotional state is represented more in the style than in the subject and as a result I tend to experiment a lot and work in a variety of styles. During periods of relative happiness and security I allow myself more freedom to play with color and composition and I delve into the world of non-representational painting. In times of depression and discontent, painting takes on a more meditative quality and realism offers me a kind of focus that abstraction does not. Either way, the aim is still to create an emotional dialogue between the art and the viewer and I believe that each piece should have no single interpretation but rather that which the viewer gives it."
